Before the Curtain Rises

Author

At Juilliard, young artists polish their craft and, for the most part, train to be performers. In this issue, we explore some of what has to happen before the curtain goes up.

Composing is among the most behind-the-scenes of activities, and this month, we look at several venerable composers—Pierre Boulez and George Crumb—as well as some younger composers whose work premieres here this month. We also peek in as Juilliard’s dancers prepare to mount their Senior Production, and an actor talks about how her experience at audition callbacks last spring prepared her for life at Juilliard.

We wouldn’t have this incomparable atmosphere of creative ferment without the larger Juilliard community. More than 90 percent of students receive funding; several reflect on how scholarships have let them pursue their dreams. Take a moment to soar with them—and, as always, if you have any questions or comments, let us know at journal@juilliard.edu.

Happy spring.
