Body

With a theme of change for the 21st century, Juilliard’s 24th annual Martin Luther King Day celebration took place on January 16 in Paul Hall. The festivities kicked off with a panel moderated by President Joseph Polisi with students Kris Bowers, John Brancy, Jessica Garand, Julia Headley, and Kerry Warren talking about their own projects and also how the performing arts can affect change. Performances included jazz student Samora Pinderhughes’s Transformations Suite for ensemble and spoken word; third-year Raymond Pinto dancing his A Wing for You (pictured); fourth-years Jeremie Harris as Malcolm X and Sekou Laidlow as King in a scene from Jeff Stetson’s The Meeting; “We Shall Lift Every Voice in Gilead,” a medley of “We Shall Overcome,” “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” and “There Is a Balm in Gilead,” arranged by first-year Jahaan Sweet (pictured, at piano) for jazz combo; and a monologue from playwrighting alum Katori Hall’s The Mountaintop given by Maechi Ahwaranwa (Group 38), who also directed the night’s events. (Photos by Nan Melville)
