Trips Down Memory Lane

Robert Taub’s remembrance (“Jacob Lateiner: Teacher, Artist, Magician,” Juilliard Journal, February 2011) brought back fond memories I have of my Juilliard days.  I think I knew every square foot of the “old” Juilliard building on Claremont Avenue. My master’s degree was in piano with Alton Jones, another lovely person, artist, teacher. Thanks for this.

The following letter was written in response to “Probing the Performing Arts-Health Care Connection” and “Critical Moments: 7 Alumni Talk About Switching Careers,” Juilliard Journal, February 2011.

I was accepted at the Juilliard School of Music when it was still on Claremont Avenue and was to have begun my studies in fall of 1970, in one of the first classes to enter the School after it moved to Lincoln Center. I declined the generous offer and instead attended Boston University on a full scholarship, where I majored in psychology and biology, not music, and then completed two master’s degrees and a Ph.D. before becoming a successful medical research scientist and a licensed psychotherapist.

And yet, at times I wonder how different my life would have been if I had attended Juilliard. My inclusion on your e-mail list has given me a magnificent trip down memory lane.
