In October, Tune Up Philly, a Philadelphia Youth Orchestra outreach program of which Paul Smith (MM ’08, guitar) is the assistant director, announced it has a new site partner. Launched in 2010, Tune Up Philly works with 150 underserved children helping them master musical and other learning skills; it is modeled after Venezuela’s El Sistema. In addition to being the group’s conductor, Smith (above) creates curricula for urban classrooms and speaks about community engagement. He also appears on the recent Vienna Modern Masters release Mannes Guitarists Play David Loeb, and last December the Philadelphia Chamber Brass premiered his Bagatelles for Brass Quintet.
