In June, dance faculty member Irene Dowd (’70, dance) will receive the American Dance Festival’s Balasaraswati/Ann Dewey Beinecke Endowed Chair for Distinguished Teaching. Dowd was profiled in the January issue of Dance Teacher magazine in an article called “Core Control.” Photos of third-year dancer Solana Temple accompany the article. 

In December, Chamber Music Today, the Seoul-based festival run by cello faculty member David Finckel and his wife, pianist Wu Han, celebrated its third season with a series called From Beethoven to Russia. This spring, Finckel and Han will perform in Fort Worth, Tex.; Ames, Iowa; Columbus, Ohio; Chicago; Reno, Nev.; Berkeley and Carmel, Calif.; Hartford; Seattle; and Albuquerque.

In October and November, ballet faculty member Charla Genn staged Giselle for the Washington Ballet at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

Vocal Arts faculty member John Giampietro directed the new play Year of the Rooster by Eric Dufault at the Ensemble Studio Theater this winter; the run was extended through early February.

In October, guitar faculty member Sharon Isbin performed with Costa Rica’s National Symphony in San Jose. In November, she gave the Belgian premiere in Liege of Yi2: Concerto for Guitar, which was written for her by Tan Dun. In December, she performed a solo concert honoring the centennials of Benjamin Britten and her mentor former faculty member Rosalyn Tureck (Graduate School Degree With Distinction ’55, piano) at the 92nd Street Y. In January and February, Isbin toured 18 cities with jazz guitarists Stanley Jordan and Romero Lubambo. 

Evening Division faculty member Julie Jordan’s (MM ’83, piano) New York Concerti Sinfonietta will perform on March 2 at the Church of the Holy Apostles in New York City. Paul Hostetter (MM ’79, percussion) will conduct the ensemble’s Shining Stars International Competition prize winners: Typher Yom (Sibelius Violin Concerto); Andrew Kirjnir (Symphonie Espagnole), Sarah Ma (Mendelssohn Violin Concerto), and Elliot Kim (Kabalevsky Piano Concerto in D Major). 

The Bowdoin International Music Festival has established the Kaplan Fellowship Program in honor of violin faculty member Lewis Kaplan (Pre-College ’51; BS ’58, MS ’60, violin), the festival’s founding director. Kaplan will retire as director after 50 years at the conclusion of this year’s festival.

In November Pre-College faculty member Matthew Odell (DMA ’10, collaborative piano) presented a lecture-recital on late music by Elliott Carter (faculty 1966-84) at the National Conference of the College Music Society held in Cambridge, Mass. In October, Odell performed a recital in honor of the 90th birthday of Ned Rorem (BS ’46, MS ’48, composition) at Spectrum Performance Space in New York City.

Pre-College ear training faculty member Eric Sessler’s (MM ’96, DMA ’99, composition) String Quartet  was premiered in October by the Dover Quartet, which commissioned the piece, at Howard Community College in Baltimore. The piece has also been played at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia in December, as part of the Philadelphia Chamber Music Series, as well as at venues in Florida, California, and Oregon. 

STAFF

In December, Katie Friis, who’s the associate director of dance and drama admissions, received her master’s in higher education administration from CUNY’s Baruch College. While she was there she received the Stephen J. Jerome Fellowship twice.

In March, De Profundis, a composition for oboe by I.T. database administrator Tim Goplerud (MM ’84, double bass), was premiered by Meredeth Rouse at George Mason University’s Oboe Masters Weekend in Fairfax, Va. 

In January, Pre-College violin faculty assistant Khullip Jeung (Pre-College ’94; BM ’02, MM ’04, violin) joined the pre-college violin faculty at Mannes College the New School for Music.

STUDENTS

Artist Diploma in Opera Studies soprano Julia Bullock will give a Young Concert Artists recital on March 11 at Merkin Concert Hall. On the bill are songs by Verdi, Wolf, Messiaen, and others as well as the premiere of a work by master’s student David Hertzberg (BM ’12, composition), this year’s Y.C.A. composer-in-residence. Renate Rohlfing (MM ’12, collaborative piano) will accompany Bullock.

In February, first-year master’s pianist Ignasi Cambra performed works by Mozart and Mahler with Valery Gergiev conducting the Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theater at l’Auditori in Barcelona, Spain. On March 16, Cambra concludes a series of three concerts at La Pedrera, also in Barcelona. 

Third-year piano student Yung Hoon Chun won second prize in the sixth international piano competition in Almaty, Kazakhstan, in November.

First-year dancer Joshua Guillemot-Rodgerson’s first semester at Juilliard was chronicled in the Marlborough (New Zealand) Express article “Juilliard’s Only Kiwi Is Dancing With Stars.”

First-year dancer Daisy Jacobson was featured in “Learning Curves: At a Crossroads” in the November issue of Dance Magazine.

In November, Dollhouse by fourth-year composition student Molly Joyce was performed by the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra as part of its inaugural Composer Institute.

Cellist Hyewon Kim (Pre-College ’09), who’s in Juilliard’s joint bachelor’s-master’s program, performed in January with the Eastern Connecticut Symphony at the Garde Arts Center in New London. The program included Elgar’s Cello Concerto, Sibelius’s Karelia Suite, and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 2.

In December, first-year trumpet student Maximilian Morel (Pre-College ’13) ran the Hot Chocolate 10K on Roosevelt Island.
