Superstorm Sandy hit in earnest on Monday night, October 29. Part of the ConEd plant on East 14th Street flooded, a transformer blew up—and most of Lower Manhattan was plunged into darkness (as seen in this photo taken from the Christopher Street pier by Keith Michael, production coordinator of the Dance Division). The Journal asked members of the Juilliard community to send photos of the storm; here are just a few that came pouring in.

Second-year bassist Michael Chiarello took this shot of a partially destroyed home in Haworth, N.J. Fortunately, no one who lived there was hurt.

Makeshift electronic device charging center

Among the results of the outage was that some generator-powered organizations let customers charge their phones, computers, and medical devices, as this photo by percussion faculty member Gordon Gottlieb shows.

Liberal Arts faculty member Harold Slamovitz, who lives in Greenlawn, Long Island, said that when the storm hit, “the giant oak trees in our wooded neighborhood all came down like bowling pins.”

The weekend after the storm, Irina Shteyn, Juilliard’s senior financial analyst, joined up with Occupy Sandy, an offshoot of Occupy Wall Street, which sent people to ravaged New Dorp, Staten Island.

The flooding as a result of the storm was mind-boggling. Keith Michael, the production coordinator for the Dance Division, took this photo from West 10th Street (usually several blocks from the Hudson).

Paulette Penzvalto, an intern in the Special Projects Office, helped out with a Missionaries of Charity mobile soup kitchen in Lower Manhattan.

Harp faculty member Nancy Allen captured a moment of post-storm grace near her home in Westchester County.

Liberal Arts faculty member Anthony Lioi captured the lighter side of storm recovery with this New Brunswick, N.J., train station scrawl.
