Who's In This Mystery Photo?

It’s 1987, U2 and Whitney Houston are on the radio—but who are these Juilliard dancers? If you can identify the students in this unmarked (except for the date) photo from the Archives, please let us know at journal@juilliard.edu or call us at (212) 799-5000, ext. 340. Thanks! (For answers, see the April 2012 Journal.)

And now, a few responses to previous unidentified photos from the Juilliard Archives. Regarding the February photo, Irwin Appel (Group 16) wrote, “Hi everyone, it’s me! It is from a fourth-year drama production of The School for Scandal, directed by Michael Langham. My character’s name was Sir Oliver Surface.” Appel, currently a professor of theater and director of the undergraduate actor training program at the University of California at Santa Barbara, is still acting, and also working as a director, composer, and sound designer. Porretta couldn’t quite tell who the other (mostly obscured in the photo) actors were, but noted that Mark Vietor (Group 16) was also in the production.

Greg Porretta (Group 18) recognized Appel and also identified the partially visible actor on the right as David Bishins (Group 18; actors from other classes played the supporting roles in this production). He thought the one on the left might be Mike Rudko (Group 16) as Sir Peter Teazle and also said that Jessica Katz was the photographer. Contacted for confirmation, Katz said she undoubtedly did take that May 1987 photo.

The December-January issue’s Missing in Caption photo depicted a dance production. Michael Simon (B.F.A. ’81, dance) told The Journal that the dancer on the right is Rodney McGuire (’79, dance)—and he thought the one on the left is Allysia Sneed (B.F.A. ’80, dance). Anyone know what the production might have been? Let us know at journal@juilliard.edu or call us at (212) 799-5000, ext. 340.
