For the first time since it was established in 2004, the sixth annual Juilliard Journal Award this year goes to two illustrators: Nick Choksi, a third-year drama student, and Scott Aiello, a first-year drama student, who were selected in recognition of their outstanding contributions to Juilliard’s monthly newspaper. With cartoons poking fun at everything from the School’s new turnstiles to Joe the Plumber to the generic inclusiveness of holiday greetings, these two funny fellows have been adding spice to The Journal’s pages throughout the year, including providing multiple illustrations for the special three-page presidential election feature in the November issue.

Nick was born and raised in St. Louis, Mo., and received a B.A. in English literature from Washington University prior to beginning his training at Juilliard. Nick has worked professionally at the Shakespeare Theater Company in Washington and at the Repertory Theater of St. Louis. This month, he will appear as Berowne in Love’s Labour’s Lost and as Montano in Othelloin the third-year Shakespeare repertory offerings (see article on Page 5). Recent roles at Juilliard include Argante (Scapin), Earl Hill (Book of Days), Sorin (The Seagull), Joe (Who is PT Butterhouse?), Lord Capulet (Romeo and Juliet), Thomas Putman (The Crucible), Dr. Gerald Lyman (Bus Stop), and Mr. Antrobus (The Skin of Our Teeth).
Scott, who was born and raised in Chicago, received a B.A. in philosophy from Loyola University before entering Juilliard’s actor training program. Scott has worked extensively in the Chicago theater scene prior to beginning his first year of training this past fall at Juilliard. Recent roles at Juilliard include Uncle Semlicue (Dark of the Moon), Ashenback (Talking Pictures), and the title role in Pericles.
Student-written articles and original drawings constitute a major portion of The Juilliard Journal. The Journal Award was created to encourage and recognize those students who not only make writing and drawing for The Journal an integral part of their academic experience, but also keep the Publications Office aware of topics that should be covered in these pages. Students interested in writing or providing cartoons for the paper should contact the senior editor at extension 341.
