Faculty members Emanuel Ax (Diploma ’70, Postgraduate Diploma ’72, piano) and Itzhak Perlman (’68, violin) will appear with Yo-Yo Ma (’72, cello) on PBS in a Live From Lincoln Center telecast on May 5. Their performance will include Mendelssohn’s Piano Trios, Op. 49 and Op. 66. (See Discoveries.)

A biography of jazz faculty member Ron Carter by Dan Ouellette, titled Ron Carter: Finding the Right Notes, was published by ArtistShare in 2009. The multiplatform project includes audio and video content in addition to the book itself. 

Jane Gottlieb, vice president for library and information resources and chair of the Doctoral Governance Committee, has been appointed editor of the Music Library Association’s quarterly journal, Notes. She succeeds James P. Cassaro, who has edited the journal since 2004. Gottlieb has served the M.L.A. in many capacities, including president from 1995-97, and has also been active in the International Association of Music Libraries.

Mari Kimura (DMA ’93, violin), music technology faculty, has been awarded a 2010 Guggenheim Fellowship in music composition by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.

Juilliard President Joseph W. Polisi will receive an honorary Doctor of Arts degree from Middlebury College on May 23. 

Mithra, a piece by Literature and Materials of Music faculty member Behzad Ranjbaran (MM ’88, DMA ’92, composition), was commissioned by several orchestras in northern California, in conjunction with Meet the Composer’s Magnum Opus Project. The work, inspired by ancient Persian mythology, was premiered by the Santa Rosa Symphony, conducted by Bruno Ferrandis (MM ’86, Professional Studies ’87, orchestral conducting) in February at Wells Fargo Center for the Arts in Santa Rosa, Calif. That same month, Ranjbaran’s Seven Passages was performed by the Peoria (Ill.) Symphony Orchestra at the Peoria Civic Center Theater, conducted by faculty member George Stelluto (Artist Diploma ’06, orchestral conducting).  

STUDENT NEWS

In March, opera studies Artist Diploma student Haeran Hong was named a finalist in the Metropolitan Opera’s 2010 National Council Auditions and sang in the Grand Finals Concert with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra at the Metropolitan Opera House. 

The Juilliard Trumpet Ensemble, comprised of bachelor’s and master’s trumpet students Caleb Hudson, Katie Miller, Toby Penk, Lyn Schoch, Colin Sieg, Stuart Stephenson, and Alexander White, won the ensemble division of the 2010 National Trumpet Competition at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., in March, performing Hudson’s arrangement of Rossini’s William Tell Overture. In the graduate solo division, Miller won first place and Penk won second place. In the undergraduate solo division, Schoch took first place and Hudson placed third.
