Dean and Provost Ara Guzelimian moderated a postconcert discussion with early-music specialist Jordi Savall following the New York premiere of Savall’s The Route of the New World: From Spain to Mexico. The performance, by the Tembembe Ensamble Continuo, took place at Alice Tully Hall last month.
On May 3, Evening Division faculty member Julie Jordan (MM ’83, piano) will perform with the New York Concerti Sinfonietta and pianists Hiromi Abe and Noriko Sugiyama at St. Joseph’s Church in Greenwich Village. They will play works by Ravel, Shostakovich, and Mozart.
As part of its series documenting the Salzburg Festival, Orfeo International recently released a live recording of a 1959 festival performance by the New York Philharmonic with Leonard Bernstein conducting his Symphony No. 2 (“The Age of Anxiety”) and piano faculty member Seymour Lipkin as soloist.
In February, dance faculty member Banu Ogan performed in a piece by Pam Tanowitz as part of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum’s Works & Process series. Tanowitz is one of four choreographers who have been commissioned to create works for the School’s December 2011 New Dances series.
In February, a work by Literature and Materials of Music faculty member Behzad Ranjbaran (MM ’88, DMA ’92, composition), Seemorgh: Persian Trilogy for Orchestra, was performed by the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Jacques Lacombe, at Newark’s New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Morristown’s Community Theater, and New Brunswick’s State Theater.

The St. Louis chapter of the American Guild of Organists announced that bachelor’s organ student David Ball is the winner of the rarely conferred Outstanding Organ Student Award. The award ceremony will be held on May 9.
In February, the American Academy of Arts and Letters announced that doctoral composition student Michael Ippolito would be one of six recipients of its Charles Ives Scholarships. The $7,500 award is made in recognition of promising composition students.
In November, Pre-College guitarist Kevin Sherwin, a student of Tali Roth, won the Junior Division Solo Competition of the New York State division of the American String Teachers Association.
