Alan Gilbert (Pre-College ’85; MM ’94, orchestral conducting), the director of conducting and orchestral studies, led soprano soloist Deborah Voigt and the New York Philharmonic on September 21 in the opening night gala celebration for the Philharmonic’s 170th season. The program was featured on PBS for the Live From Lincoln Center telecast. On September 10, Gilbert led the orchestra in a free performance of Mahler’s “Resurrection” Symphony; the concert was a tribute for the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and was simulcast on Lincoln Center’s Josie Robertson Plaza and broadcast on WQXR radio and, the following day, on PBS television’s Great Performances.

Modern dance faculty member Linda Kent and Lawrence Rhodes, artistic director of the Dance Division, were both featured in the August issue of Dance Magazine. 

The Juilliard String Quartet, whose members are violinists Joseph Lin (Pre-College ’96) and Ronald Copes, violist Samuel Rhodes, and cellist Joel Krosnick, performed at the Farmers’ Museum in Cooperstown, N.Y., as part of the Cooperstown Summer Music Festival in August. The program featured Haydn’s Quartet in G Major, Op. 54, No. 1, Beethoven’s Quartet in B-flat Major, Op. 130, with the Grosse Fuge, and Donald Martino’s Quartet No. 5.  

In September, the Tenet and Metropolis ensembles performed Literature and Materials faculty member Raymond Lustig’s (MM ’05, DMA ’10, composition) Compose Thyself at New York City’s Angel Orensanz Center. 

Risa Steinberg, associate artistic director of the Dance Division, was featured in the August issue of Dance Teacher magazine talking about how she teaches Limón technique.  

In September, graduate studies faculty member Kent Tritle (BM ’85, MM ’88, organ; MM ’88, choral conducting) became the director of cathedral music and organist at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. 

This summer was busy with both teaching and performing for Vocal Arts’ artistic director, Brian Zeger (M.M. ’81, piano). In addition to directing the Steans Music Institute Program for Singers in Highland Park, Ill., and guest teaching at Chautauqua (N.Y.) Opera Young Artists Program and the International Meistersinger Akademie in Neumarkt, Germany, Zeger performed with Adrienne Pieczonka in Canada, Anna Netrebko in France, and Deborah Voigt and Bryn Terfel in the U.S.

STUDENT NEWS

Among the recipients of the 2011 ASCAP Foundation Morton Gould Young Composer Award are students Yuri Boguinia, Peng-Peng Gong, Wei-Cheih Lin, and Gity Razaz; Pre-College students Sidarth Jayadev,Michael Parsons, Travis Petre, and Conrad Tao; and alumni Jeremy Howard Beck (MM ’10, composition), David Fulmer  (MM ’06, DMA ’11, composition), and Ryan Gallagher (BM ’07, composition). This award is a result of the ASCAP Foundation’s annual competition for gifted composers up to 30 years of age.

Jared Miller, a master’s composition student of Samuel Adler, is the recipient of this year’s John Koerner Award in the Fine and Performing Arts. This $4,000 grant is given to an outstanding British Columbia student studying fine/performing arts in a postsecondary institution and planning to pursue this venture professionally. Miller is also the recipient of a SOCAN (Canadian copyright collective) Foundation Young Composers Award for his solo piano work Instincts, which was commissioned by Sara Davis Buechner (BM ’80, MM ’81, piano). 

The Attacca Quartet, this year’s graduate student resident quartet, won third prize in the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition. The quartet, which was formed when its members were Juilliard students, is comprised of Amy Schroeder (BM ’06, MM ’08, violin) and Keiko Tokunaga (BM ’07, MM ’08 violin), Luke Fleming (MM ’07, viola), and Andrew Yee (BM ’06, MM ’08, cello).

Master’s composition student Shen Yiwen is one of six composers chosen out of more than 150 candidates to participate in the Minnesota Orchestra’s 2012 Composer Institute. The institute, which will take place January 2-7 in Minneapolis, will include rehearsals, seminars, and tutoring sessions. On July 6, the Minnesota Orchestra will perform Yiwen’s First Orchestral Essay in a concert led by music director Osmo Vanska.
