In October, piano faculty member Emanuel Ax (Pre-College ’66; Diploma ’70, Postgraduate Diploma ’72, piano) launched his season as the New York Philharmonic’s 2012-13 Mary and James G. Wallach Artist-in-Resident.  

The New York Philharmonic’s opening-night gala, conducted by director of conducting and orchestral studies Alan Gilbert (Pre-College ’85; MM ’94, orchestral conducting), included performances of works by John Williams (’55, composition), Massenet, Sarasate, and others and featured violin faculty member Itzhak Perlman (Pre-College ’63; ’68, violin). Audra McDonald (BM ’93, voice) hosted the Live From Lincoln Center telecast of the festivities.

On November 13, the New York Concerti Sinfonietta, directed by Evening Division faculty member Julie Jordan (MM ’83, piano) and conducted by Paul Hostetter (MM ’85, percussion), will perform at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall with featured guests Andrew Cooperstock (MM ’83, piano) and violinist William Terwilliger (of the Opus Two duo), plus violin master’s candidate Liyuan Liu, and violinist IhnSeon Park.

Juilliard’s resident brass quintet, the American Brass Quintet—faculty members Raymond Mase (trumpet), Kevin Cobb (MM ’95, trumpet), David Wakefield (BM ’74, MM ’75, DMA ’81, French horn), Michael Powell (trombone), and John Rojak (BM ’80, bass trombone)—will receive the Richard J. Bogomolny National Service Award, Chamber Music America’s highest honor, in January.

Compositions by Music Theory and Analysis faculty member Behzad Ranjbaran (MM ’88, DMA ’92, composition) were performed on numerous occasions over the summer. His Enchanted Garden for piano quartet received its Italian premiere at the Pitti Palace museum in Florence; Saratoga for orchestra was performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra under Charles Dutoit in San Francisco; Seven Passages was performed by the Qatar Philharmonic under Alastair Willis and at the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music (where Ranjbaran is on faculty) by the festival orchestra under Marin Alsop (Pre-College ’72; BM ’77, MM ’78, violin). 

This summer, Alexander Technique faculty member Lori Schiff taught at the Aspen Music Festival and at the International Meistersinger Akademie in Germany. This fall Schiff is presenting Alexander Technique master classes for the New York Youth Symphony, Opera America, and the New World Symphony. She also chaired and organized the 25th annual meeting and conference for the American Society for the Alexander Technique, which was held at Juilliard in May and June.

STAFF

This summer, jazz orchestra librarian Andrew Gutauskas (Artist Diploma ’06, jazz studies) recorded with Japanese composer Miho Hazama as well as with Steve Wilson and Stefon Harris. Also this summer, Gutauskas performed with soul singer Eric Hutchinson at New York’s Highline Ballroom and with the Pedro Giraudo Big Band at Birdland.

In November, finance office administrative assistant Katherine Howell will be in California to sing in the chorus of Berg’s Wozzeck with Esa-Pekka Salonen conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra of London. There will be performances at Zellerbach Hall in Berkeley (Nov. 10) and the Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles (Nov. 13).

STUDENTS

On November 3, Pre-College violinist Mercedes Cheung will perform Paganini’s 24 Caprices for solo violin at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall.

In May, third-year jazz trombonist Andrew Clausen performed on stage with indie pop group Feist at Radio City Music Hall. In June, Clausen performed with Bill Frisell at Seattle’s Royal Room. And his band, the Wishbone Ensemble, was named the 2011 Alternative Jazz Ensemble of the Year by Earshot Jazz Society.

This summer, second-year jazz studies major Braxton Cook recorded with Christian Scott’s band in Hollywood and performed with the band at the Blue Note in New York. 

In August, fourth-year oboist Julia DeRosa (Pre-College ’09) won the 2012 Yamaha Young Performing Artists competition. 

In August, Pre-College flutist Dominique Kim won second place in the high school competition at the National Flute Association convention in Las Vegas.

This summer, Pre-College violinist Colin McGregor performed outside Paradise Bakery in Aspen, Colo., and raised $400 for music programs in Japan.

Pre-College bassist William McGregor won grand prize in Ensemble 212’s young artist competition and performed with the ensemble at Merkin Hall in May.

Third-year jazz trumpeter Riley Mulherkar performed in June with Bill Frisell and Wayne Horvitz at Seattle’s Royal Room.

Michael James Shaw (Group 42) played the role of Gus in the Williamstown Theater Festival mainstage production of Far From Heaven, a musical based on the 2002 movie of the of the same name. The production, which opens at Playwrights Horizons this spring, was directed by Michael Greif.

Jazz bass student Dan Stein performed with Billy Hart at Trumpets in Montclair, N.J., in February. 

First-year jazz saxophonist Dean Tsur was a semifinalist in this year’s North American Saxophone Alliance Jazz Competition.

In August, Pre-College flutist Yibiao Wang won an award for best performance of a newly commissioned work at the National Flute Association’s convention in Las Vegas.
