In June, Per Brevig (Diploma and Postgraduate Diploma ’67, BM ’68, DMA ’71, trombone) will receive a lifetime achievement award from the International Trombone Association at the group’s annual festival, which takes place this year at Juilliard.

In July, Fred Fehleisen, who teaches music history, will present a paper on Handel’s creative process in Messiah at the 17th Biennial International Conference on Baroque Music in Canterbury, England. The paper will explore compositional and rhetorical elements in the music and text of “I know that my Redeemer liveth,” showing how this aria relates to other movements in the work.

In February, Anthony McGill was the soloist for Nielson’s Clarinet Concerto with the University of Southern Mississippi Symphony Orchestra.

♦ Itzhak Perlman (Pre-College ’63; ’68, violin) recorded a special bonus track called “Excerpts From Fiddler on the Roof,” which was arranged by John Williams (’55, composition), for the new Broadway cast album, which was released by Broadway Records in March.

In February, Matthias Pintscher made his Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra conducting debut at Royce Hall in a program of music by Fauré, Schoenberg, and Ravel along with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8.

Four members of the Historical Performance community—faculty members Cynthia Roberts (violin) and Phoebe Carrai (cello); second-year harpsichordist Leonard Schmid; and Chloe Fedor (MM ’13, historical performance; MM ’15, violin)—performed at a Charleston (S.C.) Bach Society concert in March.

♦ Greg Sandow (Pre-College ’60) will host a concert of his music on April 14 at the Mansion at Strathmore in North Bethesda, Md. The program includes excerpts from his opera in progress As You Like It as well as his Mahler Variations and Ground, for electric cello.

Arlene Shrut was in residency at the Penn State School of Music in January and February to present a master class, coach voice students, and perform a recital.

Robert C. White Jr. will join the voice faculty this summer of Opera Viva, an intensive program in Italian operatic repertory in Verona, Italy, from July 17 to August 9.

Students

In March, third-year violinist Ànnika Brynn-Lascara Jenkins (Pre- College ’13) was the soloist for Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E Minor with the Hampton Roads (Va.) Philharmonic at the American Theatre. In October, Jenkins performed Sibelius’s Violin Concerto in D Minor with Symphonicity, the Symphony Orchestra of Virginia Beach (Va.), at the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts.

Graduating Historical Performance students Toma Iliev and Nayeon Kim have both won section violin positions with Portland Baroque.

In February, second-year master’s violinist William Shaub was the featured soloist for the Canton (Ohio) Symphony Orchestra concert of Fritz Kreisler’s Praeludium and Allegro and Liebesleid as well as Pablo de Sarasate’s Zigeunerweisen.
