Faculty

In October, Pre-College and Evening Division faculty member Evan Fein (MM '09, DMA '14, composition) accompanied tenor Bragi Bergthórsson for a recital titled Northern Voices. The program, at New York City's Scandinavia House, included excerpts from Fein's New Icelandic Folksongs.

In August, a production of The Cherry Orchard featuring drama faculty members Deb Hecht and René Houtrides was performed at Panther Creek Arts in West Fulton, N.Y. The production also featured Group 48 alumni Anthony Bowden, Brandon Homer, Nate Mann, Julia McDermott, and Anya Whelan-Smith.

In September, dance faculty member Jane Kosminsky's (BFA '61, dance) project EDWIN, the Story of Edwin Booth, had a limited run at the Theatre at Saint Clement's Church. The play, written by Eric Swanson (Group 14), also features music by Marianna Rosett (Pre-College '65; BM '69, MS '70, piano). The run was dedicated to the memory of James Houghton, late director of the Drama Division.

♦​ On November 9, late piano faculty member Seymour Lipkin will be honored with a memorial concert at Carnegie's Weill Recital Hall. Among his students and colleagues who will perform are Koji Attwood (MM '99, DMA '05, piano), Steve Beck (BM '01, MM '03, piano), Rieko Aizawa (MM '96, piano), Lora Tchekoratova (BM '96, MM '98, DMA '03, piano), and faculty members Laurie Smukler (BM '77, violin), and cello chair Joel Krosnick.

Violin faculty member Itzhak Perlman (Pre-College '63; '68, violin) collaborated with pianist Martha Argerich on Schumann, Bach, Brahms (Warner Classics), which was released in September.

In September, drama faculty member Kate Wilson coached Greta Gerwig's directorial debut, Lady Bird, as well as Broadway productions of The Cherry Orchard, The Front Page, and Les Liaisons Dangereuses.

In September, flute faculty member Carol Wincenc (MM '72, flute) played in China with her former student Stephanie Kwak (BM '14, MM '16, flute) and the Jeju Philharmonic. Wincenc performed composition faculty member John Corigliano's Pied Piper Concerto with the Anchorage Symphony in March and with the Edmonton Symphony in June. She spent the summer at festivals in Fredericksburg, Va., and Sarasota, Fla.; at the Banff Centre in Canada; California State University's Summer Arts Flute Symposium; the Round Top Festival Institute; the Norfolk (Conn.) Chamber Music Festival; Caramoor; and the National Flute Association Convention in San Diego.

Staff

Wynton Marsalis ('81, trumpet), director of Juilliard Jazz, received a National Humanities Medal in September.

Emily Werne, manager of alumni relations, and organist James Kennerley (MM '15, historical performance) were married in July.

Students

Pre-College violinist Elli Choi won the World Monaco Music Masters Competition in September.

Pre-College composer Benjamin P. Wenzelberg was awarded first prize at the Grafenegg Festival in Austria as he made his composition and conducting European debut with the world premiere of his orchestral composition Heroic Dreamscape Fantasy. Wenzelberg was selected to participate in the international Ink Still Wet workshop for composers and conductors. His piece was performed by the Tonkünstler Orchestra, which will perform it again in an upcoming subscription concert at Vienna Musikverein's Golden Hall.
