Richard Cook, a choreographer and member of the Juilliard faculty since 2000, died in a hospice near Seattle on July 14. He was 57. Born in California on October 22, 1951, Cook received training there and at the Royal Conservatory in the Netherlands. He spent the early part of his career performing with the San Francisco Opera, Pennsylvania Ballet, and Lines Ballet, and then went on to become a teacher and choreographer. A full-time member of the ballet faculty at SUNY-Purchase Conservatory of Dance, Cook served for 10 years as associate artistic director of the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet. He taught ballet at Juilliard and was often a guest teacher at professional dance companies across the United States. Cook was a three-time recipient of choreographic fellowships from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, and he served on peer review panels for that organization and others. His works have been performed by the Atlanta Ballet and Dayton Ballet, and were featured in three of the Carlisle Project’s annual summer showcases.
