Deming, who was born and raised in New York City, had many ties to Juilliard. She received her bachelor’s degree from Bennington College, and while she mainly studied acting, she also studied dance with future Juilliard faculty members Martha Graham, Martha Hill, Doris Humphrey, and Bessie Schonberg. Deming later became friends with John Houseman, the founding director of the Juilliard Drama Division, and taught here during the program’s early years. Robert Beseda (Group 4) wrote of her passing that Deming was “a brilliant wonderful lady of the arts and letters and beloved of her students.”
